3D Experience Conference Summary
David Beal,
President
National Geographic Entertainment
David Beal, President of National Geographic Entertainment played us a few entertaining clips from the Nat Geo archive, the first being a clip from the 3D epic, U23D – a high end 3D concert produced by 3D production company 3ality. U23D was produced a few years ago but it is often used as an example of good, well planned large format 3D. Next up was a clip of Sea Monsters – a fun 3D film with extreme negative (coming out of the screen) 3D fish!
Richard Gelfond,
CEO and Director
IMAX Corporation
Following David Beal was Richard Gelfond, CEO and Director of the IMAX Corporation who was not as enthusiastic about 3D as one might expect, especially as IMAX have been presenting 3D movies for over 20 years. 2D showings on an IMAX screen are often more successful for IMAX than 3D showings, an example of this was Inception, a film many thought would have been a great movie in 3D but was more successful for IMAX than many of their 3D screenings.
He compared the recent explosion in 3D and subsequent waning of consumer interest to the dot com bubble. Many commentators back then predicted that the Internet had no future. Of course, the Internet is more successful than ever right now and that was Richard’s point.
