During a pre-MIPCOM interview, Electric Sky CEO David Pounds acknowledged there was now plenty of 3D content but still not plenty of good content.
Electric Sky, one of the UK’s largest independent distributors, with over 1500 hours of content on the books, has been attending MIPCOM for the past 15 years, first introducing the company’s 3D catalogue in 2010. Since then, the distributor has licensed 3D content deals in Russia (NTV Plus), Poland, Brazil (Globosat), Canada, Korea and Japan and aims to increase the 3D catalogue to at least 20 hours by the end of the year.
Electric Sky is still partially funding new 3D programming whose core potential markets are Blu-ray, connected TV and linear TV. Electric Sky is looking to both acquire new programming as sell content from their catalogue at this year’s MIPCOM which starts October 3rd in Cannes.
During an interview with 3D Focus, David Pounds said that he remained optimistic about the 3D content industry and that even if 3D does mature into a niche format, niche programming can still remain a viable business. “Niche does not necessarily mean there is not a business model, niche has succeeded in many areas of TV.” Pounds said. He also expects the 3D business model to evolve into a subscription model for its survival.
Perhaps some positive news for 3D producers is that David Pounds confirmed that broadcasters and platform owners are still paying higher license fees for 3D shows, in-line with the additional production costs. David Pounds agreed with the general acknowledgement that the 3D format is a format best reserved for event TV saying “I do agree with that but event TV means appointment to view across a number of genres including factual.”
Having being requested for more extreme 3D David responded, "3D broadcasters need to offer quality 3D content that gives the viewer a 3D experience as opposed to what could be considered exceptional HD. We are therefore looking for content that shares the benefits of 3D!"
