Speaking at the Creating a New 3D Experience conference at MIPCOM on Monday, Austin Shaw, Co-Founder of Omniverse Vision, Ltd, revealed that Freemantle Media, producers of the X Factor, have been in discussions with the live digital cinema event company to stream the X Factor finals in 3D to digital cinemas.
Live 3D events in digital cinemas have proven to be a success for the chains who can generate extra revenue during the typically quite times such as Monday and Tuesday. With the X Factor being the highest rated show in the UK, it is expected that showing the X Factor live finals in 3D and in cinemas would prove popular with X Factor fans but there have been concerns about the large amount of pre-recorded footage within the programme. Austin said there may need to be additional live video exclusively shot for the cinema audience.
Live 3D event cinema (or alternative cinema) is highly lucrative and can even command a premium compared to regular 3D films. For example, Carmen in 3D cost £18 – £20 which included Champagne receptions.
It is not confirmed whether the finals of the current series of X Factor will be given the cinema 3D treatment but stay tuned to 3dfocus.co.uk for updates. ITV appear to be cautiously embracing 3D having commissioned a 3D version of its extreme angling reality series River Monsters. Produced by Icon Films, River Monsters is expected to be the start of a larger 3D offering.
