Possibly inspired by the massive success of Titanic 3D (to be released on 3D Blu-ray on September 14th) , the James Cameron 1997 hit that generated $344 million after a $18 million conversion, Fox will use the same company, Studio 3D, to replicate its success.

The conversion will be released before the expected two Independence Day sequels.

Independence Day 3D will mark the second occasion Will Smith has been ‘converted’ as Men In Black III, currently playing in cinemas, was 100% post converted to 3D by Prime Focus World.

Independence Day 3D is likely to be a big hit, not because of its 3D credentials (although part of its success will be due to that) but due to nostalgia reasons. Even James Cameron recently said, audiences were returning to Titanic out of nostalgia or a desire for the big-screen experience.

Another ‘classic’ set to return to cinemas in 3D will be Top Gun, currently being converted by 2D to 3D conversion facility house Legend3D.
