Ridley Scott Wont Ever Shoot in 2D Again After Prometheus 3D
Speaking during yesterday’s Comic Convention in San Diego, Alien director Ridley Scott declared he would not return to 2D filmmaking after experimenting with the 3D format for his 2012 Sci-Fi movie, Prometheus 3D.
Speaking on a giant screen via a live video link from a remote island in Iceland (during a shoot for the film), Ridley Scott said he was “very impressed” with the 3D technology later saying “3D has been a wonderful exercise but I was brought up as a camera operator so its really about lensing and all that kind of stuff. So with the help I’ve had from a wonderful cameraman and his technical team its been, for me, a pretty straight forward ride. That said I’ll never work without 3D again, even for small dialogue scenes. I love the whole process. 3D opens up the universe of even a small dialogue scene so I’ve been very impressed with that."
Ridley Scott is the latest high profile director to declare a strong belief that the 3D format has a future in filmmaking. Once a 3D movie cynic, Michael Bay recently released his 3D film, Transformers: Dark of the Moon; Martin Scorsese is currently in post production for Hugo Cabret 3D and Peter Jackson is in production of The Hobbit 3D – all high profile directors shooting movies with 3D in mind from the start rather than as an after-thought conversion.
During the conference, Scott also said that Prometheus will use live special effects rather than CG effects. 3D equipment will be based on “post Avatar” technology which is likely to mean FUSION 3D rigs from CAMERON-PACE Group. It is said that darkness and shadows will be added in a post process due to the higher lighting levels required on the set of a 3D production.
Prometheus will be Ridley Scott’s first 3D release and his first science fiction film since Blade Runner 25 years ago. The film, which began shooting in March and is now being shot in England, is loosly related to Scott’s epic sci-fi hit Alien. Originally designed to be a prequel to Alien, Prometheus writer Damon Lindel recently claimed that it is no longer an Alien prequel as it has developed its own identity.
Prometheus 3D will be released by Fox in 2012.
